As the
Tanzanian government tries to improve the education
level in rural areas, Agama Expeditions now offers a
special tour to support schools in these regions. We
focus on some of the poorest communities of the country.
During the
colonial government education was offered according to
one's religion and all schools were owned by
missionaries. Families were forced to accept
Christianity in order to get support from missionaries.
Those who did not take it were not accepted to schools
and were not given any educational support. The effects
of this system can be seen even today.
In our country most elderly rely on their children for
support. But the lack of education prevents their
children from getting well paying jobs, therefore they
are not able to support their parents and can't afford
to educate their own children. Thus, the vicious cycle
never ends. These families need our help with educating
their children.
Our government offers primary education for free.
Government run secondary schools are also available but
spaces are limited and securing a spot is extremely
difficult. If a child is not accepted into these
schools, its only choice is to attend a private
secondary school. Here the tuition has to be paid in
cash for each of the four years but most poor families
simply can't afford these fees. This is amongst the
biggest problems facing the poorest children of our
country.
Some of the
other problems facing our schools are the shortage of
teachers, classrooms, teaching materials and even desks
or chairs. We need your support with all of these
problems.
You can help with building classrooms or with monetary
support for either tuition, teaching materials or
classroom furniture. After visiting schools, your
suggestions as how to improve the education of these
children are always welcome. Playing with young students
and teaching them new things, even if it's a song can be
very beneficial. We also offer volunteer teaching
opportunities in these schools, from a few days up to a
month or more.
Agama Expeditions will work with you to find ways to
help that best suits you.
